We have decided only provide access to chat once students have worked through a couple of videos regarding ethics, appropriate use, etiquette and what to do when something has gone wrong. Once they have watch ed the videos, all students are required to obtain 100% pass rates in the quiz that follows. I have disabled the multiple attempts on the quiz and only allow students to complete it once a week if they get any questions wrong. Most students are extremely keen for chat access and so if they make a mistake the first time, they are much more likely to get 100% on the quiz on take 2.

The quiz ensures they know about our basic rules for using chat, some functionality, how to ‘report a concern’ around inappropriate online behaviour and finally agreeing to our written acceptable use policy from the student diary.
