FareShare rescues quality surplus food donated by supermarkets, processors, growers, and other food businesses and turns it into free nutritious meals for Melbourne’s homeless and hungry. It gives away over one million meals every year.

FareShare’s Schools in the Kitchen program is a chance for our students to learn about the reality of hunger in our community and respond to the issue by taking part in a three-hour cooking shift at FareShare’s industrial kitchen in Abbotsford. They prepare and cook donated fruit, vegetables, meats and packaged items, then taste-test the food at the end of the session.

This will be the fifth year Nossal students and staff join FareShare to assist in fighting hunger. During six visits each year about 140 Nossal students assist in cooking over 7,000 meals. Once again this year we will be unable to meet student demand to take part.

“I cried a lot because I was cutting up onions. It was really nice to help by preparing food for less fortunate people. Without the opportunity from Nossal I wouldn’t have heard of FareShare. I’m very happy I’ve had the chance to take part.”
