Students who are in their second year of high schooling or its equivalent (usually Year 8) are eligible to apply for entry into Nossal High School. Academic merit is determined by each student’s performance on a series of tests that form the entry examination. The examination process consists of six tests that cover the following areas:
- Numerical reasoning
- Verbal reasoning
- Reading comprehension
- Creative writing
- Analytical writing
Government policy allows for a maximum of 5% of students in Year 8 from any one school to be accepted into the selective schools.
It is government policy to support the participation of highly able students from disadvantaged backgrounds in accessing selective entry schooling. Students whose parents have a Commonwealth Health Care Card or students who are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders are eligible to apply for Equity Consideration. Up to 10% of the Year 9 enrolments at Nossal High School can be filled via this category.
The Principal of Nossal High School, Mr. Roger Page has the authority to accept up to 5% of the Year 9 enrolment through a discretionary category. Applicants who meet the criteria for consideration for this category will be notified by Nossal High School and be invited to submit an application. Principal’s Discretion offers are only made to students who sit the exam but miss a place due to the 5% rule or who are close to the cut off score. Not all eligible students will be offered the chance to apply.
An application fee is required and is payable at the time of registration. Payment is to be made by credit card.
The Selective Entry School Examination takes place in the Royal Exhibition Buildings in Melbourne on Saturday June 17. An information package will be sent via email to all applicants in the week before the entrance examination. Student identification numbers, transport and venue information along with helpful tips for taking the entrance examination will be included.
Applicants will receive advice about exam centres early in June and applicants will be informed of the outcomes in August each year.
The website contains detailed information about the selection process and a sample exam, as well as links to the individual selective schools websites.
Application for Entry to Years 10 & 11 in 2019 are now open.
Enrolment positions at Years 10 and 11 are limited as they depend on vacancies arising. Students interested in applying for a vacant position into Year 10 or 11 for 2019 will need to sit an entry exam which will be held at Nossal High School during 2018. A waiting list will then be created and eligible students will be invited to attend an interview with the Principal should a vacancy arise.
